Can You Get Qualified If You've Spent Most of Your Time Supervising, Not on the Tools?

If you've spent the last few years running the show — putting on crews, reading plans, sorting problems and keeping the job moving — you might reckon you've drifted too far from the tools to get qualified. Plenty of blokes worry that because they're supervising now, they can't prove they've actually got the hands-on skills. The good news is your years on the job still count, and there's often more usable evidence in a supervisor's history than you'd think. Let's walk through how it works.

Supervising Is Still Trade Work

Here's the thing a lot of people miss: you don't become a good supervisor by accident. You got there because you knew the trade inside out. A qualification like the Certificate III in Carpentry is about showing you can do the work to standard — and someone who checks, corrects and signs off on other people's carpentry every day clearly understands what "to standard" means.

The catch is that a qualification is built around specific skills (called units of competency). Some of those need evidence of you actually performing the task, not just overseeing it. So the real question isn't whether supervising counts — it's how much genuine hands-on work you've still got in your history to draw on.

Most Supervisors Still Get Their Hands Dirty

In practice, very few tradies who move into supervising stop touching the tools completely. Think about your typical week:

• Jumping in to fix something the apprentice couldn't get right
• Setting out a tricky section yourself before handing it over
• Doing the fiddly bits no one else on the crew is confident with
• Filling gaps when the team's short-handed

That's all real, assessable work. Even if it's only part of your day now, it still shows the skill. And your earlier years — before you stepped up — are just as valid. A qualification looks at what you can do, not only what you did last Tuesday.

What Kind of Evidence Helps

The more you can show, the stronger your case. For someone in a supervisor role, useful evidence often includes:

• Photos and videos of work you've done yourself, past or present
• Plans and specs for jobs you've set out or worked on
• Sign-off sheets or reports you've completed as supervisor
• References from builders, clients or bosses who've seen you on the tools
• A chat about your background to map out where your skills sit

If your hands-on work is mostly in the past, don't stress — old jobs still count. And if there's a gap in a particular skill, that can often be sorted with a bit of task-specific evidence, arranged as part of the process.
