Can You Get Qualified If You've Only Ever Worked Cash-in-Hand?

Plenty of good tradies have spent years working cash-in-hand at some point — maybe when you were starting out, helping a mate, or picking up jobs on the side. If that's you, you might be worried it counts against you when it comes to getting qualified. The good news is that the work you did is still real work, and the skills you built are still real skills. What matters most is whether you can show what you've done — and there's usually more than one way to do that.

Your skills don't disappear just because the job was cash-in-hand

A qualification like the Certificate III in Carpentry or the Certificate III in Painting & Decorating is about what you can actually do on the tools. It's not a test of your tax history. If you've hung doors, framed walls, cut in edges or rolled out a full repaint, that experience is what we help you turn into a nationally recognised qualification — no matter how you got paid at the time.

So the short answer is: yes, cash-in-hand work can absolutely count. The catch is that with cash work there's often less of a paper trail, so we just have to be a bit smarter about how we show your skills.

Where cash work makes evidence trickier

When you're formally employed, there's usually payslips, timesheets, an ABN on invoices, maybe a supervisor who can vouch for you. Cash-in-hand jobs don't always leave that trail behind, which can make it harder to prove the "when, where and how much" of your experience.

That's the honest part of this. The evidence still has to meet the requirements of each unit in the qualification, and the final call on whether you're competent is made by the partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO), not us. We can't promise an outcome — but we can help you put together the strongest, clearest evidence you've got.

The kinds of evidence that still work

You'd be surprised how much you can pull together even without formal payslips. Things like:

• Photos and videos of jobs you've done — before, during and after
• References from builders, homeowners or tradies you've worked alongside
• Text messages, quotes or job notes that show you organising and doing the work
• A skills demonstration — showing you can do a task the right way, recorded or observed
• Your own detailed account of the jobs you've done and how you did them

The aim is to build a picture that clearly shows you've got the skills each unit is asking for. If your paperwork is thin, we lean harder on photos, references and demonstrations to fill the gaps.
