Can You Get Qualified If You've Only Ever Done Fixed-Price Contract Work?

The short answer is: the way you got paid doesn't matter nearly as much as the work you actually did. Fixed-price work is still real work

Whether you charged by the hour, worked on a day rate, or quoted a fixed price for the whole job, you were still swinging the tools. A carpenter who frames a house on a fixed-price contract is doing the exact same carpentry as one on wages. A painter who quotes a whole repaint for a set figure is still doing the prep, the cutting in and the finishing coats.

For getting qualified, what matters is the skills you demonstrated and can show evidence of — not the commercial arrangement behind them. So don't count yourself out just because you've always worked lump-sum.

What actually gets assessed

To turn your experience into a Certificate III in Carpentry or a Certificate III in Painting & Decorating, your evidence needs to line up with the units of competency in that qualification. That means showing you can do the range of tasks the qualification covers, to the standard it expects.

The one thing fixed-price work can hide

• Quotes and invoices for jobs you've completed
• Contracts or written agreements with clients or builders
• Photos of your work — before, during and after
• Client or builder references
• ABN records, insurance and any licences or white cards
• Receipts for materials and equipment you bought for jobs

That kind of paper trail can actually tell a very strong story about the range and quality of work you've done over the years.

What if a job is only ever "one part" of the trade?

Some contractors specialise. Maybe you've mostly done fit-outs, or decks, or exterior repaints. If your work has been narrow, it doesn't mean you can't get qualified — it just means we may need to look at how to show the other skills the qualification covers.
