If the company you did years of good work for has since closed its doors, you might be worried that your experience has vanished with it. The good news is that a business shutting down doesn't erase the skills you built there. Plenty of tradies who've spent years on the tools worked for outfits that no longer exist — and there are still solid ways to prove what you can do. Here's how it works when you want to turn that experience into a nationally recognised qualification.
The work you did is still real, whether the company is still trading or not. When you go to get your experience recognised, the goal is to show that you can do the tasks required in each unit of a qualification — like a Certificate III in Carpentry or a Certificate III in Painting & Decorating. That's about your hands-on ability, not whether your old employer is still around.
So a closed business is a hurdle, not a dead end. It usually just means gathering your evidence from a few different places instead of relying on one old boss for everything.
The partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO) makes the final call on whether your evidence meets the requirements, so the more angles you can show, the better. Even with a shut-down business, there's often plenty to work with:
You don't need to have kept a perfect file over the years. Most tradies are surprised by how much they can pull together once they start looking through the phone, the shed and the inbox.
A company closing doesn't mean everyone from it has disappeared. Old supervisors, leading hands and even fellow tradies can often still speak to your ability. A quick message on socials or a call to someone you kept in touch with can go a long way.
If your old boss has retired or you genuinely can't reach anyone, don't stress. References are one type of evidence, not the only one.
