Can You Get Qualified If You've Never Worked Full-Time in the Trade?

Plenty of good tradies never clocked up a run of full-time work in the one job. Maybe you did part-time hours around family, picked up work here and there, or ran your own small gig on the side. That doesn't mean the skills aren't real — and it doesn't automatically rule you out of getting qualified for the work you've actually done. Here's how it works when your hours have been anything but nine-to-five.

It's about what you can do, not how many hours a week you did it

When you go to turn your experience into a qualification, the question isn't "did you work full-time?" It's "can you show you can do the tasks in the qualification to the standard the units require?" A carpenter who did three days a week for years still swings a hammer, reads plans, and frames a wall the same as anyone else.

So the real focus is on the skills and the evidence behind them — not the shape of your working week. Part-time, casual, seasonal, side jobs on weekends: it all counts as long as you were genuinely doing the work.

The catch: you still need enough range and depth

Here's the honest bit. Working fewer hours sometimes means it takes longer to build up the full spread of tasks a qualification covers. A Certificate III in Carpentry or a Certificate III in Painting & Decorating each cover a broad set of skills — different jobs, different situations, different materials.

If your part-time work only ever touched one narrow slice of the trade, you may have gaps. That's not a dead end. It just means we look at where the evidence is strong and where it's thin, so you know exactly what still needs showing.

What counts as evidence when your hours were patchy

The good news is evidence isn't a timesheet showing 38 hours a week. It's proof of the work itself. That can include:

• Photos and videos of jobs you've done, start to finish
• Invoices, quotes or job records — even for small or occasional jobs
• References from builders, clients or supervisors you've worked with
• A chat with an assessor where you talk through how you do things

Patchy hours often means your evidence is spread across lots of little jobs rather than one big employer. That's fine. Sometimes it even helps, because you've worked across a wider variety of sites and situations.
