Plenty of good tradies got their start in the family business. You grew up on the tools, learned from your old man or an uncle, and never really thought about paperwork because the work just kept coming. Now you're wondering if all those years actually count toward a qualification — or whether it's a problem that you only ever worked for family. The short answer: working in the family business doesn't hold you back at all. What matters is the work you've done and whether you can show it. Let's break it down.
There's nothing in the rules that says your experience only counts if you worked for a stranger. Skills are skills. Whether you built decks and pergolas for a family carpentry outfit, or spent years painting and decorating alongside your parents, the work you've done on the tools is what a qualification looks at.
So if you're chasing a Certificate III in Carpentry or a Certificate III in Painting & Decorating, the fact that your boss shares your last name makes no difference. What we're doing is helping you turn that hands-on experience into a nationally recognised qualification — one that lets you show anyone, anywhere, what you can do.
Here's where the family business does bring one small wrinkle. When you work for family, the paperwork often gets loose. Maybe there were no formal payslips. Maybe jobs were quoted on a handshake. Maybe records were kept in someone's head instead of a filing cabinet.
That's not a dealbreaker — but it does mean we need to get a bit creative about proving what you've done. The good news is there's usually plenty of evidence lying around once you start looking:
If the family business ran lean on paperwork, don't panic. A big part of what All Pathways does is help you dig out and organise the evidence you didn't realise you had. A reference from a family member can still count, by the way — it just needs to be honest and specific about the work you actually did. It's not about who signs it; it's about whether it genuinely backs up your skills.
This is the honest part. All Pathways doesn't hand out qualifications — we help you gather and complete the evidence. The formal assessment and the certificate itself come from a partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
That means we can't promise you'll get qualified. The competency decision is made by the RTO, and it depends on your evidence meeting the requirements of each unit in the qualification. What we can do is give you the best possible shot — helping you put together clear, solid evidence so the assessor has everything they need to make a fair call.
