If you're partway through an apprenticeship and wondering whether you can get qualified faster by having the skills you already have recognised, it's a fair question — and one we hear a lot. The short answer is that it depends on where you're at and what you're chasing. Let's walk through how it actually works, so you know what makes sense for your situation.
If you're currently signed up in a formal apprenticeship, you're already on a structured pathway. Your training contract, your registered training organisation (RTO) and your employer are all working together to get you across the line. That system is designed to recognise the on-the-job hours and the training you're doing along the way.
So if you're an active apprentice, the best move is usually to talk to your existing RTO or apprenticeship network first. They may already be crediting your work experience toward your qualification. There's no point paying for something you're getting anyway.
Where we come in is a bit different — and it suits a different kind of tradie.
Getting your experience recognised is really built for people who've been working in the trade for years without a formal qualification. Think:
That last group is worth a closer look. If you started an apprenticeship, walked away, and have since racked up years of solid experience on the job, you might not need to start over. Your years on the tools could count toward a qualification — through having that experience assessed against the units in the course.
Instead of sitting in a classroom relearning things you already do every day, you gather evidence of the work you've done — photos, videos, references from supervisors, job records, that kind of thing. All Pathways helps you pull that evidence together and get it into shape.
From there, the evidence goes to our partner RTO, who makes the call on whether it meets the requirements for each unit. We want to be straight with you here: we can't promise or guarantee a qualification. The outcome depends on your evidence actually meeting the unit requirements, and the competency decision sits with the partner RTO — not with us. Our job is to help you put your best foot forward.
