Plenty of good tradies have spent years on the tools without keeping a single bit of paperwork. No invoices filed away, no photos, no neat folder of job records — just the work, done and dusted, then on to the next one. If that sounds like you, you might be wondering whether you've missed your shot at turning that experience into a qualification. The short answer is no, you haven't. A lack of tidy records makes things a bit harder, but it's rarely a dead end.
When you go to get your experience recognised, the partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO) needs proof that you can actually do the work to the standard of a Certificate III — in Carpentry or in Painting and Decorating. Written records are one way to show that, but they're far from the only way.
Evidence can come from a whole range of places:
So if the shoebox of invoices doesn't exist, don't panic. There's usually more evidence sitting around than you'd think.
Before you assume you've got nothing, have a proper dig. Most tradies are surprised by what turns up once they look. Check your phone camera roll — photos of finished decks, fit-outs, painted rooms or framing all count. Look through old emails and text messages with builders or clients. Scroll back through your bank statements or accounting app for records of jobs and materials. Even social media posts of your work can be useful.
You don't need everything. You need enough, across the right areas, to show you meet the requirements of each unit.
Sometimes there genuinely isn't much to find, and that's okay. This is where two things become your friends.
Current work. If you're still on the tools, we can help you capture evidence from the jobs you're doing right now. A few photos, a short video, a quick description of the task — done properly, that builds a strong picture of your skills as you go.
People who've seen you work. A supervisor, a builder, a long-time client — someone who can vouch for the standard of your work can provide a reference. This carries real weight when the written records are missing.
Between fresh evidence and the right references, a lot of gaps can be filled without a single old invoice.
This is honestly the part most people get stuck on, and it's exactly what we're here for. When you work with All Pathways, we help you work out what evidence each unit needs, then help you gather and organise it into a form that's ready to go to the partner RTO. If you're short in an area, we'll point you to the simplest way to top it up — often with work you're already doing.
Here's how the cost works, plainly:
No lock-in, no surprises.
We can't promise you'll get qualified, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Whether the qualification is granted comes down to your evidence meeting the requirements of each unit, and that competency decision is made by the partner RTO — not by us. What we can promise is that we'll help you put your best, most complete case forward, and be straight with you along the way about where you stand.
Missing paperwork isn't the barrier a lot of tradies think it is. The skills are in your hands; we just help you prove it.
