What Is an RTO (Registered Training Organisation)?

19 June 2026 · All Pathways

Start looking into getting qualified and one acronym shows up everywhere: RTO. It's worth knowing exactly what it means, because an RTO is the only kind of organisation that can actually give you a nationally recognised qualification.

What an RTO is

RTO stands for Registered Training Organisation. It's a body that's been formally approved and is regularly audited by Australia's national training regulator to deliver, assess and issue nationally recognised qualifications.

The "registered" part is the important bit — an RTO has to meet strict standards and stay accountable to keep its registration. That's what gives the qualifications it issues their weight.

What only an RTO can do

Plenty of organisations can teach you a skill. But only an RTO can:

If a certificate didn't come from an RTO, it isn't a nationally recognised qualification — full stop.

How All Pathways works with a partner RTO

Here's where we fit, and we're upfront about it: All Pathways is not the RTO. We're the part that makes getting qualified from your experience straightforward — we help you gather and complete your evidence, answer the questions, organise your photos and work history, and get it all review-ready.

Then the formal assessment and your certificate come from our partner Registered Training Organisation. That separation is a good thing: it means your qualification is issued by a properly regulated RTO, so it's the genuine, recognised article.

Why this matters to you

It means the certificate you end up with isn't a participation award — it's a real, nationally recognised qualification from a registered, regulated body. That's exactly what employers and licensing authorities are looking for.

Getting qualified through this path

You bring the experience; we help you turn it into review-ready evidence; the partner RTO assesses and issues. You go at your own pace, $20/week while you build your evidence (cancel anytime), plus a one-off $500 only at the very end when you're ready to submit.

A fair heads-up

Getting started doesn't guarantee a qualification — the outcome depends on your evidence meeting the unit requirements, and the competency decision is made by the partner RTO.
