What Is a USI (Unique Student Identifier) and Do I Need One?

If you're working towards a nationally recognised qualification in Australia, you'll come across three letters pretty quickly: USI. It sounds bureaucratic, but it's actually simple — and getting one takes about five minutes. Here's what it is and why you need it.

What a USI is

USI stands for Unique Student Identifier. It's a reference number — a string of letters and numbers — that belongs to you for life. Every person who does nationally recognised training in Australia needs one, and it links to a secure online record of the qualifications and training you complete.

Think of it as your personal training record number: one place where all your nationally recognised qualifications live, no matter which provider you earned them through.

Why you need one

The key reason is straightforward: you can't be issued a nationally recognised qualification without a USI. A registered training organisation (RTO) is required to have your USI before it can issue your certificate. So whatever pathway you take to get qualified, a USI is part of it.
