If you've been on the tools for years, chances are the proof of your skills is already all around you — on your phone, in your inbox, in the shed. The trick to turning your experience into a nationally recognised qualification down the track is hanging onto the right bits of evidence while you're still working, so you're not scratching your head trying to remember a job from three years ago. Here's how to build a tidy stash of records as you go, so the process is far smoother when you're ready.
Every job you knock over is a small piece of proof that you can do the work to industry standard. When you decide to get qualified for the skills you already have, an assessor needs to see evidence that matches what's in the qualification — things like setting out, framing, finishing, prepping surfaces or applying coatings, depending on your trade.
The good news? You're generating that evidence every single day. You just need to capture it before it disappears. A photo you take today could save you hours of hunting later.
Photos are gold because they show the work in your own hands. When you're snapping shots on a job, try to capture:
Take more than you think you need. Storage is cheap, and you can always cull later. Back them up to the cloud so a lost phone doesn't wipe out years of proof.
Photos show what you did; your paperwork shows that you did it, over time, in a real working environment. Worth keeping:
None of this needs to be fancy. A running note on your phone with the job, the date and a line about what you tackled is plenty.
Beyond photos and payslips, a few other things can strengthen your case:
Keep it all in one spot — a dedicated folder on your phone or computer, or even a shoebox for the paper stuff. Future-you will be grateful.
When the time comes, All Pathways helps you turn that pile of evidence into a proper application for a qualification like the Certificate III in Carpentry or Certificate III in Painting & Decorating — online, at your own pace. We help you sort what you've got, spot any gaps, and pull it together neatly.
Here's the honest part: gathering good evidence doesn't guarantee a qualification. The final competency decision is made by our partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO), and it depends on your evidence meeting the requirements of each unit. The better your records, the smoother that goes — which is exactly why saving them now pays off.
When you're ready, the way it works is simple. Your first week is free to have a look around. After that it's $20 a week while you build your evidence, and you can cancel anytime. There's a one-off $500 at the very end — only when your evidence is complete and ready to be submitted to the partner RTO. No surprises, no lock-in.
Start a folder today, snap a few photos on your next job, and when you're ready to turn that experience into something official — have a chat with All Pathways and we'll help you take it from there.
Answer a few quick questions and set up your pathway — first week free, then $20/week, cancel anytime.
