Do You Need References from Old Bosses to Get Qualified?

30 June 2026 · All Pathways

If you've been working on the tools for years but never got the piece of paper, one of the first worries that pops up is usually about references. Maybe you've lost touch with old bosses, worked cash jobs, or moved around a fair bit. The good news is that getting your experience recognised isn't only about chasing down references from every employer you've ever had. Let's walk through what actually matters when you're turning your skills into a qualification like a Certificate III in Carpentry or Certificate III in Painting and Decorating.

So, do you actually need references?

Short answer: references can help, but they're rarely the whole story. When you go to turn your experience into a qualification, the partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO) needs to see evidence that you can do the work to the standard set out in the units. A reference from a supervisor or boss is one type of evidence — it backs up the claim that you've genuinely done the work. But it sits alongside a whole range of other things you can provide.

So if you're missing a reference or two, don't write yourself off. There are usually plenty of other ways to show what you can do.

What counts as evidence besides references

The assessment is about proving your skills against the requirements for each unit. Things that can help build that picture include:

You don't need every single one of these. The aim is to put together enough quality evidence that the partner RTO can see you genuinely meet the requirements for the qualification.

What if you can't track down your old bosses?

This is a really common situation, and it doesn't have to stop you. People lose contact, businesses close down, and some of your best work might've been years ago. If a reference isn't possible, you lean more heavily on the other types of evidence — your photos, your work history, and your ability to talk through and show what you do.

In some cases a current employer, a regular client, or even another qualified tradie who's worked alongside you might be able to vouch for your work. It's worth a think about who's seen you on the tools, but it's not a deal-breaker if the list is short.

How All Pathways helps you put it together

This is where we come in. We help you work out what evidence you've already got and what's worth gathering, so you're not staring at a blank page wondering where to start. We'll guide you on the kinds of photos, records and references that strengthen your case, and help you complete everything in a clear, organised way.

To be straight with you: we don't make the final call on whether you're competent — the partner RTO does that, and it depends on your evidence meeting the unit requirements. What we do is help you give yourself the best shot by getting your evidence sorted properly before it's submitted.

What it costs

We keep this simple and upfront:

No hidden extras, no pressure, and no fake deadlines.

The bottom line

A missing reference or two won't necessarily hold you back. What matters is showing — through a mix of evidence — that you can do the work to the standard required. References are one piece of that puzzle, not the whole thing. If you've got the skills and some way to show them, you're already further along than you might think.
