Do You Need a Portfolio of Photos to Get Your Painting Skills Recognised?

6 July 2026 · All Pathways

If you've spent years on the tools painting and decorating, you might be wondering whether you need a neat folder full of photos to get your skills recognised. The short answer is: photos help, but they're only part of the picture. Let's walk through what a portfolio actually is, why it matters, and what else counts as evidence when you're turning your painting experience into a nationally recognised qualification.

What a "portfolio" really means here

When people say "portfolio," they usually picture a glossy book of before-and-after shots. In the world of getting your experience recognised, a portfolio is broader than that. It's simply the collection of evidence that shows what you can do — and photos are just one type of evidence.

For the Certificate III in Painting and Decorating, the aim is to show that your everyday work lines up with the skills and knowledge described in the qualification's units. Photos are a great way to do that, because painting is such a visual trade. But they're not the only way, and you don't need a fancy presentation folder to get started.

Why photos are so handy for painters

Painting is one of those trades where the results speak for themselves. A photo of a properly prepped surface, a clean cut-in line, a spray job with no runs, or a finished feature wall tells an assessor a lot about your workmanship.

Good photos to keep an eye out for include:

You don't need studio-quality shots. A clear photo from your phone is plenty. If you've been snapping the odd job over the years, dig those out — they're gold.

What if you don't have many photos?

Plenty of tradies come to us worried because they never thought to photograph their work. That's completely normal, and it's not a dealbreaker. There are lots of other ways to show what you can do.

Other evidence can include:

That last point matters. You don't have to rely only on old work. If you're still on the tools, you can gather fresh evidence as you go — snap a few shots on your next few jobs and you'll build your portfolio in no time.

How All Pathways helps you pull it together

This is where we come in. Instead of leaving you to guess what's needed, we help you work out what evidence you already have and what gaps to fill. We'll point you toward the kinds of photos, documents and references that best show off your skills, so you're not chasing things that don't count.

We help you gather and organise everything, then get it ready to submit. From there, the formal assessment and the competency decision are made by our partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO). We can't promise a qualification — the outcome always depends on your evidence meeting the unit requirements — but we make sure your evidence is as strong and complete as it can be before it goes in.

What it costs to get started

There's no big upfront bill to see if this is right for you. Here's how it works:

That means you can start gathering photos and documents, see how it feels, and only commit to the final step when you're genuinely ready.

The bottom line

You don't need a polished portfolio of photos to get your painting skills recognised — but photos, alongside references and job records, make a strong case. If you've got a few shots tucked away on your phone, that's a great head start, and if you don't, we'll help you build your evidence from here.
