How to Get Your Certificate III in Painting and Decorating Recognised — Without Starting Over

19 June 2026 · All Pathways

You've been cutting in straight lines, prepping difficult surfaces and matching finishes since before half the job sites you walk onto existed. You are a painter. The only thing you're missing is the certificate that says so on paper.

For a lot of experienced painters, that missing piece of paper is the difference between staying where you are and stepping up to bigger jobs, licensed work, or running your own show. The good news: if you've already got the skills, you don't have to go back and learn them from scratch.

Why the qualification is worth getting

A nationally recognised Certificate III in Painting and Decorating (CPC30620) can open up:

If you've ever been passed over for a job because you couldn't show the ticket, this is how you fix that for good.

Your years on the tools already count

Here's what most painters don't realise: the work you do every single day is exactly the evidence a qualification is assessed on. Instead of sitting through lessons on surface prep you've done a thousand times, you can be assessed on what you already know — by showing your real work.

That means no going back to study the basics. You demonstrate your competence, and a registered training organisation assesses it against the qualification.

How it works, step by step

  1. Tell us about your trade. A few quick questions about your experience and the qualification you're after.
  2. Build your evidence. Answer questions about how you work and upload photos or short videos of your jobs — prep, undercoats, top coats, cutting in, spray work, special finishes.
  3. We review it with you. Our team checks it over and helps you fill any gaps so nothing's left half-done.
  4. A partner RTO assesses and issues. Your completed evidence goes to a partner registered training organisation for formal assessment and your certificate.

What you'll need to show

Most of this is already sitting on your phone:

The more variety you can show, the stronger your evidence.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

You go at your own pace — knock it over in a few weeks, or build it up over a few months around your jobs. There's no deadline and no lock-in.

It's $20 a week while you put your evidence together, and you can cancel anytime in one click. To be upfront: there's also a one-off $500 right at the end — and only then — when everything's complete and ready to be submitted to the partner RTO for your certificate. You'll know well before you get there.

A fair heads-up

Getting started doesn't automatically hand you a qualification — the outcome depends on your evidence meeting the requirements of the units of competency, and the competency decision is made by the partner RTO. What we do is make the path clear and painless, and help you put your strongest evidence forward.
