Can You Get Qualified If You've Only Ever Worked on New Builds, Never Renovations?

If you've spent your whole career on new builds — slab-up houses, fresh frames, brand new bathrooms and kitchens — you might wonder whether that counts when it comes to getting qualified. Maybe you've never touched a renovation, never patched into an old wall or worked around someone else's dodgy handiwork. The short answer is: yes, new build work absolutely counts. Here's how it fits.

What a qualification actually looks at

A qualification like the Certificate III in Carpentry is built around a set of units — the specific skills and knowledge that make up the trade. Things like setting out, framing walls and roofs, installing doors and windows, fixing off, working safely, reading plans and working to standards.

Nowhere does it say those skills have to be shown on a renovation. If you can demonstrate you've done the work to the required standard, it doesn't matter whether the job was a fresh build or a reno. What matters is the skill itself, and the evidence that you can do it properly.

New builds cover more than you might think

Tradies who've only done new builds sometimes worry they've missed out on a big chunk of the trade. In reality, new construction usually ticks a huge number of the units head-on:

• Setting out and levels from scratch
• Wall, floor and roof framing
• Installing windows, doors and hardware
• Fitting cladding, decking and external work
• Internal fixing, skirtings, architraves and cabinetry
• Working from plans and to the National Construction Code

That's a lot of the trade right there. Plenty of experienced new-build carpenters find their day-to-day work lines up neatly with the units they need.

What if some units lean toward renovation work?

Some units might touch on skills that come up more often in renos — like working around existing structures or making good on older work. If your evidence doesn't naturally cover something, that's normal, and there are a few ways to handle it.

You might have done a similar task on a new build that still shows the skill. You might have picked it up on a job years back. Or the partner RTO may suggest a short bit of gap work to round things out. None of this means you're back to square one — it just means we make sure the evidence tells the full story.
