Plenty of tradies spend years on one big job — a mine site, a housing estate, a commercial fit-out, a long infrastructure build. You turn up, do good work, and before you know it a decade's gone by on the same project. Then someone asks about your qualification and you wonder: does all that count if it was really just the one job? The short answer is yes, it can — as long as the work covered the right range of skills. Here's how it actually works.
When people hear "one big job for years," they picture doing the same thing over and over. But big projects are rarely that simple. A long carpentry job might have you framing, setting out, hanging doors, fixing off, working from plans, dealing with different materials, and problem-solving on the fly across different stages. A long painting and decorating job could cover prep, surface repairs, spraying, brushwork, different coatings, interior and exterior — all on the one site.
So the question isn't really "how many jobs did I do?" It's "how much of the trade did I actually cover?" A single long project often ticks more boxes than a bloke who bounced between a dozen short ones.
A nationally recognised qualification like the Certificate III in Carpentry or the Certificate III in Painting & Decorating is broken into units of competency. Each unit describes a skill you need to show you can do. To get qualified, your evidence needs to show you've done the work described across those units.
That's where a long single job can go one of two ways:
Either way, the important thing is being honest about what the work covered. The competency decision is made by the partner Registered Training Organisation (RTO), based on whether your evidence meets the unit requirements. Nobody can promise you'll qualify before that evidence is looked at.
