If most of your days have been spent pulling things apart rather than building them up, you might reckon that doesn't count for much on paper. Plenty of blokes who've done years of demolition and strip-out work think their experience is a bit of a dead end when it comes to getting a trade qualification. But the truth is more interesting than that — a lot of what you do on a strip-out job overlaps with real carpentry skills. Let's have an honest look at where it fits and where you might need to fill a few gaps.

That's more relevant to a Certificate III in Carpentry than a lot of people realise. Knowing how a wall, floor or ceiling is put together is the same knowledge you'd use to build one.
A carpentry qualification is made up of individual units — things like using tools and equipment safely, working with timber and materials, following plans, and applying safe work practices. A good chunk of that is exactly what you're doing on demolition and strip-out jobs.
For example, safe work practices, handling materials, using power and hand tools, and understanding building structures are all part of the qualification and all part of your day-to-day. So a solid slab of the evidence could come straight from the work you've already been doing.
Here's the honest bit. Carpentry is a building trade, and some units are about putting things together — framing walls, forming and setting out, installing structures, doing finishing work. If your career has been mostly taking things apart, you may not have enough evidence to cover those construction units on your own.
